2009 Beira, Mozambique Mission Trip

Our 2009 mission trip took us to Africa for the first time - to Beira, Mozambique to help build a large Education and Evangelism center in this country that was coming out of a ten year civil war. Much of the education infrastructure had been destroyed. We also had a dental and medical clinic. Since they were just coming out of the civil war, there were no places for us to stay, so we stayed in tents on the school grounds. This was a new experience and the rain and mosquitoes made for some interesting evenings!

The school was constructed with a combination of cinder block and hydroformed mud blocks that we used on the classroom divider walls. The work was challenging due to the quality of the block (Maranatha had specially purchased good quality block, but when they went to pick it up, the owner had sold it to someone else and all that was available was lower quality block). It also rained quite frequently. We were able to complete most of what was assigned to us by the end of the week.

We had a medical and dental team that brought much needed relief to the surrounding area.

For our excursion, we visited the world famous Krueger National Park in South Africa. While there, we were able to see a python take down and constrict an impala! The safari guides had NEVER seen that in twenty years.

As a postscript, in 2019, a cyclone devastated the Beira area. One of the only buildings standing was the school we built for the area!
